Rare and beautiful Red Air King 'Skyscraper' Model 66 radio with the 'Globe' insert, a true American Art Deco icon. John Sideli in his book "Classic Plastic Radios of the 30's and 40's called it "one of the most important plastic radios ever made". This red Plaskon Air King Model 66 was designed by Harold Van Doren + John Gordon Rideout for the Air King Products Company of New York in 1933. This early model constructed of Plaskon (an early plastic), has the Globe insert on its deco waterfall facade. The fragile nature of the Air King radios has made them extremely rare + desirable. This Art Deco Climax 'Ruby’ Tear-Drop design model 35 radio is a rarity made by the Climax Radio & Television Co out of Chicago, Illinois in 1937. This truly is a spectacular Art Deco streamlined designed radio example that is seldom found especially with the tuning-eye. The graceful yet dynamic styling of this 'tear-drop' cabinet makes a strong Art Deco statement not seen in many radios of the time period. The beautiful striped walnut veneers accentuate the graceful streamlining of the radio that is also highlighted by a black painted base, brass dial and tuning eye escutcheons. The glossy Catalin cabinet is perfect with no cracks, chips or repairs and has beautiful intense marbleizing that really adds depth to the cabinet. Radio has original butterscotch trim, early gold fabric grill cloth, bottom foil label and back panel. Reverse painted dial glass is original and in great condition. This is truly an incredible radio that would make a great addition to any collection. Radio can be restored back to the original bright Lapis-Lazuli blue if desired. Radio measures approximately: 10.85" wide by 6.75" high by 5.75" deep. This set is sold "as-is + untested", the chassis seems complete.
