Gilbert Rohde an American designer considered to be one of the first generation of American industrial designers established his reputation during the 1920's and 1930's. Although most widely recognized for his furniture design, Rohde also designed lighting, radios, clocks and other products that changed the Art Deco era.
In 1929 he opened a design office in New York, concentrating on interior design and developing furniture in the early 'modernist style'. In the early 1930's he established a relationship with Herman Miller Inc., a firm that had previously made products imitating various traditional styles. Rohde convinced the firm of the superiority of the ideas of modernism at a time when this direction in design was virtually unknown in the USA. During his time as a designer for Herman Miller he developed an extensive line of furniture that combined functional ideas and simplicity of form with decorative details that were characteristically 'modernistic'. Rohde's use of exotic woods, glass, mirrors and polished metals were used in groups of furniture that were modular or sectional in concept. Rohde's for clock designs for the Herman Miller Company and lamps for the Mutual Sunset Lamp Company are classics that established his reputation as a significant figure in the development of industrial design in the USA. Gilbert Rohde single handedly raised the profile of the Herman Miller Furniture Company to the status they still enjoy today.
Rohde also designed for Heywood Wakefield, for clients and for his own furniture retailed by others throughout the years. His daring new designs in home and office furnishings set the stage for the later designers George Nelson and Charles Eames.

Beautiful Gilbert Rohde attributed Art Deco clock made for the Herman Miller Clock Company in Zeeland, Michigan. This model is pictured in their 1935 and 1937 catalogs and is shown as # 4717. Strong Art Deco elements are at the very heart of this model's design. The case of Maple Burl + Macassar Ebony makes the clock stand out. The dial is silver plated with lithographed numbers. The bezel around the convex glass covering the face is brushed brass, as are the six ball feet. The condition of this clock can only be described as near mint. Wood case has been refinished and looks great with a beautiful lustre. Brass trim has been cleaned. The clock is fitted with the original manual starting electric movement with starter wheel that is in working condition at this time. Power cord has been replaced with a period correct replacement. Rare + Beautiful Gilbert Rohde Clock with Thermometer/Humidity Gauge
Rare Gilbert Rohde Art Deco clock from the series of clocks designed for Herman Miller with "Air-Guide" feature. The clock is Number 6381 in the Herman Miller company literature and was shown in the 1937 catalog. Strong Art Deco elements are at the very heart of this model's design, including the brushed nickel plated face plate with the black footed case of Macassar Ebony, + three brushed metal speed-lines affixed to the top of clock. The brushed silver painted clock + "Air-Guide" thermometer/humidity faces have streamline numerals, red + black hands, and a red second hand that heighten the appeal of this rare clock. This is a truly a striking design. This clock varies from the standard model 6381 in 3 ways: the face is marked Herman Miller, the "puck" feet on the bottom of case are smaller in diameter, model # not stamped into case bottom. This is believed to be an early production or prototype of this model. The condition of this is all original showing some crazing on the Macassar Ebony finish and some cracking of the veneer on the left side(see photo). Both dial glasses are original with no cracks or chips. Dial faces are original and show some light wear consistent with the age of the clock. The clock is fitted with the original movement with starter wheel that is in working condition at this time. Power should be replaced. The 'Air-Guide' faces have streamline numerals, red + black hands, and a red second hand that heighten the appeal of this rare radio / clock combination. Radio cabinet has been restored and has a beautiful luster. The Bakelite knobs, beautiful dial, grill cloth, Gilbert Rohde ashtrays + center mounted lighter , and back panel are original to the desk set. The clocks reverse painted face with streamline numerals juxtaposed on a black background with ivory hands, and a red second hand heighten the appeal of this rare clock. Similar in design to model # 4706 but with painted black metal "cylindrical" feet and a reverse painted clock face juxtaposed on a black background with ivory hands. This most likely is a prototype/sample used to finalize the production model. Clock has original early Herman Miller label affixed to rear of clock. The condition of this clock can only be described as near mint. Painted dial glass is original with no cracks, chips or deterioration to the paint.
