Walter Dorwin Teague was originally trained as a graphic designer, but after a successful stint as a freelance designer for Eastman Kodak cameras, he became one of the most renowned American industrial, or product, designers in this country. Teague designed for many major American corporations during his long and distinguished career which made him one of the most prolific American designers of the time. He is widely celebrated for his vast array of important designs such as Art Deco gas stations, streamline Sparton blue mirror + chrome radios, and a series of Kodak cameras such as the Baby Brownie, Gift Camera 1A and the streamlined black with chrome accent Bantam. The streamline Sparton 566 "Bluebird", 557 "Sled and the 558 "Sled" and the fabulous floor standing "Nocturne" glass mirror radios were among a group of Sparton sets for 1936 styled by the noted industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague that have become prized among Art Deco collectors.

Stunning rare blue front Sparton Cloisonné with yellow catalin cabinet. The Sparton Cloisonné model 500C radio introduced in 1939 is a veritable Art Deco masterpiece designed by Walter Dorwin Teague. Its compact housing features a colorful metallic blue cloisonné front, exquisitely trimmed with a streamline lace-work of chrome and framed with yellow catalin housing. This is the only radio designed that combines all three materials. This radio is perfect with no cracks, chips or repairs to the butterscotch catalin cabinet or metallic blue Cloisonné front. The bright metallic blue Cloisonné front is free of any damage and chrome is great. Ivory plastic knobs and color coordinated grill cloth are original to the set. Radio has been well taken care of and only shows some fine scratches consistent with age + careful use. This is a great example of a radio that is seldom offered for sale especially in this great of a condition. This radio would make a great addition to any radio or Art Deco collection. Art Deco Cobalt Blue Sparton 409GL Radio by W.D. Teague
Beautiful Sparton radio model 409 cobalt blue mirror deco radio. Designed by Walter Dorwin Teague for the Sparks-Worthington Company from Jackson, Michigan in 1938. The small radio, known as the '7-Sided' is a great example of geometric Art Deco design. The radio features a beveled cobalt blue mirror with contrasting ebony lacquer ribbed feet and reverse silk-screened Deco dial numerals. The symmetrical, geometric shape and accent designs are distinctively art deco in appearance. This is a prime example of a highly sought after Art Deco radio that is matched by no other manufacturer in its flair and presence. Radio is in great all original condition and is free of chips and cracks to the original 2 pieces of mirror. Mirror has not been re-silvered and therefore retains the original gray flock on backside of mirror. Mirrors have some wear consistent with age + use that is accentuated by the flash photographs. Wood cabinet has the original light gray flock finish also great original condition with some light signs of age. The black Bakelite knobs are original to radio. The three rosettes + phillips head screws that attach the mirror pieces to the cabinet are original. Stunning Art Deco Sparton 'Bluebird' cobalt blue mirror model 566 radio with factory original matching plateau designed by Walter Dorwin Teague for the Sparks-Worthington Company from Jackson, Michigan in 1936. The radio, known as the 'Bluebird' is a considered to be a great example of Deco Streamline style. The radio features a 14" cobalt blue mirror disc, with contrasting ebony lacquer ball feet finished with and 3 chromed bands or 'speed lines' dissecting the circular speaker + dial surround. The symmetric, geometric shapes and accent designs are distinctively art deco in appearance. The display plateau is an original Sparton add-on item that was offered at the time of purchase for an additional cost; please see photo of original advertising. The cobalt blue mirror measures the same size as the radio mirror 14" and is the same color. This original Sparton mirror is untouched, free of cracks, chips and has not been re-silvered; so it does show some wear and scratches The black felt on back of mirror plateau is also original. Included with the radio and plateau is a letter from original owners explaining that the radio was purchased with the plateau back in the day. Radio is in great condition and is free of chips, or cracks to the original cobalt mirror. Wood body and ball feet have original ebony lacquer in good condition. Chrome trim, knobs and back panel are original to the radio. Mirror was at some point re-silvered and chrome re-plated. Grill cloth is a period correct replacement. Stunning European Version of the Sparton 3-Knob 557 Sled Radio
Rare export version Sparton 457X radio designed by Walter Dorwin Teague for the Sparks-Worthington Company from Jackson, Michigan in 1936. The radio, known as the 'Euro-sled' is a considered to be one of the best examples of Deco Streamline style. The 'European' version differs from the 'US' model with three distinctive features, circular art deco dial face, center tuning knob and a different chassis configuration. The graphic deco circular dial face features the names of the most important European cities of the time. The radio features cobalt blue mirrors on the front, top and left side, with contrasting ebony crystalline finish and 5 chromed bands or "speed lines". The asymmetric, geometric shapes and accent designs are distinctively art deco in appearance. This is a prime example of a highly sought rare version art deco radio that is matched by no other manufacturer in its flair and presence. Radio is in great all-original condition and is free of chips, or cracks to the original blue mirrors. Mirrors are original + look beautiful, with only minor surface scratches and oxidation consistent with age + use. Great way to display your 1938 Sparton "7-Sided" Radio
Great re-creation of the original 1938 Sparton 409-GL blue mirror radio store display. Please see the original ad showing this piece, it is made like the original shown in the 1938 Sparton sales brochure. This store display was made in the 1990's by a Sparton radio collector. These display's were given to the Sparton dealers in 1938 to showcase the radio to increase sales. The display Consists of a black painted wooden base to showcase the radio with graphics printed on archival matt-board. The text on the 1938 advertisement reads the following: "This stunningly beautiful display unit shown above is given free to all Sparton dealers. The display lends itself to dramatic use in show window or store, and it has the power of creating sales because it glorifies the smartest radio yet to reach the market"This is a a great way to display your highly sought after Art Deco Sparton 409-GL "7-Sided" radio. Ebony Sparton 517-B Radio Walter Dorwin Teague Art Deco Design
Rare Ebony Lacquer with Chrome Trim Sparton Radio
Rare 1936 517-B Sparton "Cube" with the ebony lacquer finish + chrome trim is seldom a seen Art Deco radio. Manufactured by the Sparks-Withington Company of Jackson, Michigan and was the creation of renowned industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague. This model radio was one of three finishes available in 1936: wood, ivory and ebony. Of the three, the 517-B in ebony is the only one that was available with chrome stripes and the ribbed knobs also with chrome inserts, a feature that in my opinion sets it quite apart from all the other cube radios of the period. This is truly a striking radio to look at. Radio retains the original manufacturers label affixed to chassis showing the model # as 517-B, the original grill cloth in wonderful condition with only minimal wear consistent with age. This radio has been carefully restored back to its original state, black lacquer has a beautiful sheen. The 3 chrome strips are orignal to the radio and are in very good original condition with light surface wear consistent with age and use. The Art Deco dial scale has some mild fading on the red numerals, which is common on this model. Knobs are original to the set + are the same ones used on other Teague designed models such as the mirror 557 and 558 models. Speaker is the original "Sparton Reproducer". Radio measures approximately 13.5" wide x 12.5" high x 9" deep. This set is sold "as-is + untested", the chassis seems complete. Rare Ebony Lacquer with Chrome Trim Sparton Radio
The 1936 517-B Sparton "Cube" with the ebony lacquer finish and chrome trim is seldom a seen Art Deco radio and especially in this great of original condition. Made by the Sparks-Withington Company of Jackson, Michigan and was the creation of renowned industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague. This model radio was one of three finishes available in 1936: wood, ivory and ebony.
