SONY TR-78 Transistor Radio Prototype / Sales Sample - Marked "Sample Only"

Radio acquired from the family of an employee of Agrod in New York

Sony TR-78 Transistor Radio rare sales sample or prototype model. Radio acquired from the family of an employee of the Agrod Company in New York who was the exclusive U.S. importer for all Sony radio + microphone products starting in 1957. This TR-78 was shipped to Agrod by Sony as a sales sample of a radio that was being considered for the US market - this model radio was never made available as far as we can tell. We have looked + have been unable to find reference to this model on Sony collectors websites and else where. This rare radio is faintly marked on the rear "Sample Only" and "Property of...". Cabinet is ivory plastic that is factory painted a pink/rose color - most all plastics that are molded the dye is introduced into the melted plastic and blended during the molding process the color is throughout the plastic this cabinet was painted, further identifying it as a sample or prototype. Radio retains original tag on the back stating model # as TR-78 - Seven Transistor All Wave that is somewhat faded but can still be read. Radio does have some damage + wear as seen in photos, one grill bar is cracked. Chassis seems complete except for the lack of speaker. All parts on radio seem original and correct. Beautiful original Art Deco Sparton 'Bluebird' cobalt blue mirror model 566 radio designed by Walter Dorwin Teague for the Sparks-Worthington Company from Jackson, Michigan in 1936. The radio, known as the 'Bluebird' is a considered to be a great example of Deco Streamline style. The radio features a 14" cobalt blue mirror disc, with contrasting ebony painted ball feet finished with and 3 chromed bands or 'speed lines' dissecting the circular speaker + dial surround. The symmetric, geometric shapes and accent designs are distinctively art deco in appearance. Radio is in great condition and is free of chips, or cracks to the original cobalt mirror. Mirror has not been re-silvered and shows some signs of age + use that are accentuated by the studio photos. Mirror retains the original felt affixed to the backside. Wood body (not bottom) and ball feet have have been resprayed in ebony paint. Chrome trim and knobs are original to the radio and show mild pitting, scratches. Radio retains the original back panel with 'Bluebird Model 566' stamped in white and grill cloth is also original and in good condition with only some mild staining and sign of use consistent with age and use. The cobalt blue mirror measures the same size as the radio mirror 14" and is the same color. This original Sparton mirror is untouched, free of cracks, chips and has not been re-silvered; so it does show some wear and scratches The black felt on back of mirror plateau is also original. Included with the radio and plateau is a letter from original owners explaining that the radio was purchased with the plateau back in the day. Please see the original ad showing this piece, it is made like the original shown in the 1938 Sparton sales brochure. This store display was made in the 1990's by a Sparton radio collector. These display's were given to the Sparton dealers in 1938 to showcase the radio to increase sales. The display Consists of a black painted wooden base to showcase the radio with graphics printed on archival matt-board. The text on the 1938 advertisement reads the following: "This stunningly beautiful display unit shown above is given free to all Sparton dealers. The radio, known as the 'sled' or '4-knob' is a considered to be one of the best examples of Deco Streamline style. The radio features etched blue mirrors on the front, top and left side, with crystalline finish ebony lacquer finish and 5 chrome fins or speed lines. The asymmetric, geometric shapes and accent designs are distinctively art deco in appearance. The mirrors were etched in such a way as to give the illusion of having multiple layers of glass. Radio is in great all-original condition and is free of chips, or cracks to the all-original cobalt blue mirrors. The original glass is beautiful and bright with only minor foxing to finish and minor scratches consistent with age and use like they all have. The wood 'sled' base has original ebony lacquer in nice original condition with the crystalline finish still visible. The four knobs are original to the radio. Chrome fins have retain the original chrome in wonderful condition with only some small signs of age. This is a prime example of a highly sought after Art Deco radio that is matched by no other manufacturer in its flair and presence. Radio measures approximately: 18" wide by 8.75" high by 8" deep. This set is sold "as-is + untested", the chassis seems complete. Set is being sold as a "non-working" vintage electronic device that should be gone over by a qualified technician.
